Chapter 5

In order to pronounce the decision of the Commission, General of the Army Barrington formally invited me to the central building of the Ministry of Defense, that was situated in the suburbs of the capital. I left my fly-car at the departmental area, where I was met by a lieutenant in security uniform who escorted me to the office of the Chairman of the Commission on New Technology and Armaments.

Barrington wasn’t alone in his office.

There was another high-ranking officer with the Major General’s shoulder straps sitting at the conference table, looking like anyone but the military. The uniform sat on him like a saddle on a cow, and it immediately felt like he was wearing it very rarely.

“General of the Army, Sir...” I began my report, but the General stopped me with a gesture of hand.

“Good afternoon, Mr Lavroff, you’re not here as a Second Lieutenant, you’re here as the head of the Lavroff Weapons Company, so feel free. Sit down. Before we get down to business, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. In fact, you’ve already met, except the circumstances of your meeting didn’t allow for small talk or even a simple introduction. Major General, Sir, I’d like to introduce to you the officer who organized and personally led your evacuation from the Gliese system. Second Lieutenant Igor Lavroff, who is also the head of the Lavroff Weapons Company.”

“It’s a pleasure, young man,” the Major General said it completely unmilitarylike, “I am professor Suparman Alatas, Indonesian Military Technical University in Jakarta. In the Gliese system, I was the head of the Science Laboratory that made researches... ”

The professor was silenced by Barrington’s hard gaze, “but it doesn’t matter. It’s important that my people and I are very grateful to you for saving us.”

I really didn’t get to meet the scientists that were rescued. They weren’t flying in my dropship to the rendezvous point, and there they were immediately transferred to one of the recon ships, and it left the system without delay.

“Always happy to help, Mr Alatas,” I have taken a free form of communication.

“So, gentlemen, to the main theme of our meeting,”pronounced Barrington in official tone, “Combat tests of the new EW systems for dropships, combat robots and armored space suits, developed by the Lavroff Weapons Company were considered successful by the Commission. The Ministry of Defence has decided to adopt these systems and to place an order to upgrade 1,000 dropships and the corresponding number of Goanna-2M combat robots and armored space suits. Upon completion of this order, the Ministry will decide to place orders for similar modernization of other weapons and equipment. Formally, the order must be placed through a public competition, but since there were no applications to participate in it from anyone other than the Lavroff Weapons Company, it was decided to conclude the contract with it. Congratulations, Mr. Lavroff, on your first state contract. That's a great thing to acquire.”

“Thank you, General of the Army, Sir,” I replied, still ignoring the requirements of the army regulations.
